This course prepares K-12 educators to use effective instructional techniques, methodology, and assessments for English language learners (ELLs). Participants apply researched theory focusing on sheltered instruction, particularly the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP®) Model. Instructional techniques for teaching students of limited English proficiency, including instruction in the English language and development of the student's mastery of the language skills of reading, writing, and listening/speaking, differentiated instruction, lesson comprehension, integration and use of English language standards, special education, and parental involvement as related to English language learners are also explored.

This course is not available for enrollment to residents of Alabama, Arkansas, and Kentucky.

Effective 1/1/20, the University of Phoenix (UOPX) is no longer an approved TESOL program provider in the state of New Mexico. Individuals enrolling in UOPX TESOL courses will NOT satisfy course requirements for the NM TESOL endorsement. If you are located in a state other than New Mexico, please contact your Department of Education to determine if the TESOL courses will be accepted.

  • Determine techniques to support discussion and interaction during instruction.
  • Describe how to provide hands-on practice for English language learners.
  • Evaluate English language standards (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) in lesson delivery and assessment.
  • Explain how to provide effective feedback to English language learners.

  • Describe intervention techniques for struggling English language learners.
  • Determine when special education referrals for English language learners are appropriate.
  • Analyze how culture influences family involvement.
  • Examine ways to involve culturally diverse families.
  • Define key components of effective family involvement programs.
