When writing in an academic environment, faculty require students to utilize articles from peer-reviewed journals. A student may see the phrase “refereed journal” or “scholarly journal” and both are used to describe the same type of journal. But what are peer-reviewed, refereed, or scholarly journal articles, and why do faculty require their use?
